About the PGGC

Thank you for your interest in the Pembroke Glen Golf Club! This page has been designed to help give you an idea of what our club is all about and to answer some of the most commonly asked questions we receive. Pembroke Glen is a USGA registered Golf Club which is comprised of golfers from all over Southeastern Pennsylvania. We are a non-profit organization, open to both men and women. The primary purpose for our existence is to provide a forum for our members to play golf which is official and competitive, yet at the same time fun. Although we are an official USGA golf club in every respect, we do have one unique characteristic that sets us apart from other traditional golf clubs - we own no real estate and have no physical "home" course. All of our events and competitions are played on local courses which are open to the public.

Why Be A Member?

Our members enjoy the following benefits:

USGA HANDICAP

The USGA handicap system is the official measure of golfing skill in the United States - it allows you to be assigned a handicap index which is basically a number that represents how well you play. As a member of the PGGC, you turn in each score you shoot during the year to our handicap committee, which in turn forwards them to GHIN, the USGA's handicapping service. Every three weeks during the GHIN season, you will be mailed an updated USGA handicap card showing your current official handicap index calculated from your most recent twenty scores.

GOLF, GOLF, GOLF!

We have club tournaments about every 3 weeks throughout the year at various courses in the area. These tournaments are the heart of our club; they’re where we get to play with - and get to know - each other. You are responsible for signing up for tournaments, as well as for your greens fees, payable to the course, at each tournament.Check out the "Schedule and Results" and "2010 Calendar" links over there on the left for when and where we’ll be this year.

BRING IT ON!

Some members just like to come out and play, but some like to come out and compete! For such warriors, we have a net and a gross competition for the day’s $5.00 registration fee pool at each tournament. We run a Match Play League, which has a convenient format where participants are assigned eight matches in eight three-week “rounds” during the year. The location and time of each of your matches is solely up to you and your opponent, as long as you complete each round’s match within its allotted three weeks. Our Member-Guest tournament lets us compete against each other using the borrowed skills of non-member acquaintances, and our Member-Member tournament lets us borrow from each other!

We have our big Inter-club competition, the “Tin Cup”, each fall against a rival club - we qualify for it like the big boys do for the Ryder Cup by accummulating points throughout the year which reflect how well we've played at our tournaments. Finally, our two majors, the PGGC Open in late Spring and the Club Championship at season's end are our ultimate tests of “Who’s got game?” for the year. Our champions are rewarded with our three hallowed trophies each year, the Match Play Plate for the Match Play League Champion, the Vail Memorial Trophy for the Club Championship winner, and the Handicap Cup for the Club Championship net winner (the PGGC Open champions also pass down trophies each year as well.)

What Does It Take?

The banquet at Wyncote after the 2002 Club Championship.

2010 membership dues are $45.00. For this you get your USGA handicap card, eligibility for all tournaments except the Club Championship (for which you must qualify,) and the newsletter. If you'd like to participate in the match-play league, you'll also need at least your last five scores to get an initial handicap index, and an additional $20.00 registration fee which will be used as prize money for the top match play finishers when the match play season has completed. To fully enjoy the PGGC, though, membership will also cost you time - the time it takes to participate in your club! In order to keep an "active" status and remain eligible for such things as participation in the Club Championship and voting on club policies, members must attend 4 events (2 if you are in the Match Play League), and submit 10 scores to the handicap committee during the year.
